Owl Loading
Playful owl loader animation designed with Rive to bring personality and delight to otherwise boring app loading states. The concept gained viral traction on social media and was later acquired by a client for real product usage.
Requirements, Challenges & Process
Requirements
The goal was to create an engaging loading experience for mobile apps that feels intentional rather than purely functional. The loader needed to avoid generic or static patterns, remain lightweight and developer-friendly, and be flexible enough to adapt to real product environments without sacrificing performance or usability.
Challenges
One of the main challenges was making the loader visually playful without turning it into a distraction. Translating complex motion ideas into performant, real-time animation required careful balance, as did ensuring a smooth handoff between design and development. Another key challenge was scaling a conceptual animation into a production-ready UI component that could realistically ship in a live app.
Process
We provided a team consisting of:
1 Designer
The concept originated nearly eight years ago during the golden era of Dribbble as an After Effects motion piece created for a contest. Rather than discarding the idea, it was preserved as part of an evolving design journey.
The first major refresh happened in Figma, where the concept was adapted to a real mobile UI context. The focus was on simple shapes, fast visual exploration, minimal overthinking, and clear UI framing.
The heart of the project came with a full rebuild in Rive, transforming the concept into a production-ready system. This phase included upgraded gradients and vector assets, motion timelines, scroll-constrained auto layout, joystick-based interaction controls, and data binding to track scroll position and trigger transitions. iOS integration was tested and validated, resulting in an almost plug-and-play experience for developers.
Finally, the concept was integrated and tested in an iOS environment, confirming a smooth developer handoff and demonstrating that the animation could scale from concept to real-world implementation with minimal friction.
